Background: To tell the story of Kija, it's necessary to know the founding story of the Kingdom of Kouka, in which Akatsuki no Yona takes place, first. Essentially, the red dragon god called King Hiryuu descended to the world of humans, taking on a human form himself. People at the time were evil, though, and after rejecting the demands of the other four dragons to get rid of said humans, the dragons decided - due to their love for Hiryuu - to give their blood to four human warriors. They helped Hiryuu to fight the evil in the land until Hiryuu's human form died. From this point on, the paths of the four dragons separated, creating the tribes of the land. They themselves went into hiding because of their special powers and the four dragons are waiting now for Hiryuu's return. The dragon blood gets passed down to different individuals through generations - but this comes with a heavy downside. The previous dragon starts to gradually lose their power and ultimately their life once the new dragon is born, causing most of them to not live particularly long.
In the village of the White Dragon, who is often referred to as Hakuryuu, the legend of the dragons is well-preserved and revered, treating them as sacred and noble beings. Kija is the one who inherited the blood of the White Dragon, receiving his powers directly from his father, who wounded his son deeply out of despair when he was born, leaving four huge scars on his back. This causes the village elder to only let them met under supervision. Kija disobeyed that order on the day he felt his father would die, though. He climbed secretly into the chambers of his father, shocked to see how thin he had become and that he had lost the power of the dragon claw, making Kija painfully aware of the fact that he has "stolen" it. However, once his father asks to see him, mistaking Kija for the village elder, Kija forgives his father everything that he did to him. From this point on, he views the scars on his back as the passion of his father in wanting to serve Hiryuu and decides to carry on the will of all the previous Hakuryuu.
The life as Hakuryuu is a bit of a lock-up, though, as Kija is neither allowed to go outside the village nor do they let him protect them, making Kija's desire to meet his master even stronger. His life changes when Yona's group comes to the village. He recognizes her as his master as his dragon blood reacts the moment he sees her and decides to follow her and her wishes loyally. He ends up developing a heavy crush on her thanks to her bold statements of her need for him and the discovery of a few similarities to her. The whole journey provides more than one culture shock for Kija and he needs some time to get used to his new life style. His main tasks become protecting Yona as well as her bodyguard Hak (with whom he has a rather tense relationship at times) and to find the other dragons with his dragon sense. Indeed, he finds the Blue Dragon, Shin-Ah, whom he treats like a younger brother after learning how badly he was mistreated by his own villagers and the Green Dragon, Jaeha, with whom, despite their clashing believes, gets along fairly well. Once the Yellow Dragon, Zeno, shows up, the four dragons are reunited. Together with Yoon, they end up forming a band of bandits called "The Dark Dragon and the Happy Hungry Bunch", which tries to protect the poor people from government officials.
Personality: As Kija was raised in a village that is revering the legend of the dragons, he believes firmly in what he was taught, which again influences a lot of his personality and actions. Kija is proud of being the successor of the White Dragon and devotes himself loyally to Yona's cause to the point that he claims he'll gladly die for her. This also leads him to initially not accepting Hak as a companion to protect Yona, as he is not one of the four dragons and thus, should not be by her side. He is taking his responsibilities seriously and tends to push his own believes on the other dragons, ending up scolding them from time to time for taking their task not seriously enough. Having found his master, Kija wishes for nothing more than to be useful to her. This causes him to be quite competitive and he is always ready to join small competitions between the other characters to prove himself, though he also becomes jealous if other people do better than him. His dedication also causes him to be rather reckless, especially in fights. where he is always placing himself on the front and tends to get rather cold-blooded and bloodthirsty if he feels that his enemies deserve it or when his friends are threatened. When he feels like he isn't useful to her, though, Kija tends to become quite frustrated with himself, showing he is quite strict with himself.
These traits weren't only born through the teachings, though, but - like mentioned - also through the knowledge that his existence slowly stole the powers and life of his very own father, which leads him to the decision to carry on the will and the hopes of all the previous White Dragons to serve their master. This also makes him rather accepting of his fate, not turning bitter about the things that have happened to him like forgiving his father for his scars or the knowledge of having a short life span. This probably is also the reason why Kija never gets too negative and upholds a rather positive and optimistic attitude, even if the odds are turned against the group. He isn't entirely without doubts, though, as Jaeha's words about him only being a puppet and having no thoughts of his own do haunt him a little.
Being raised honoured and pampered, Kija has a hard time with the life outdoors. He has troubles sleeping outside, has a great fear of bugs and is not really used to seafood. Said lifestyle also caused him to be quite gullible and naive, ranging from not being able to see beneath the surface to believing ridiculous stories or advices.
Kija possesses a sense of justice, which causes him to get very angry whenever he sees people getting mistreated by the government officials and has a hard time not to get involved in the matter. This trait also prevents him, despite his bloodthirsty fighting style, to attack unarmed people, as he feels that it would dishonor the dragon claw he possesses. Kija is also a very caring individual, which can be especially seen in his relationship with the other dragons, since he really views them as his own brothers. He takes care of them, offers them his support and his ear, shows consideration in an attempt to prevent them from exhausting themselves and is looking out for their well-being in general. His caring side can also be seen in battle, as he usually places himself so that he is having someone's back. This might also be one of the reasons why he is keeping a lot of his worries to himself, though he is sharing his thoughts and feelings from time to time with Jaeha.
Kija is also the type of person who is really straightforward. He openly cries when he is touched or happy, he doesn't hide his scars on his back and much to the chagrin of his companions, he often doesn't hold back with his complaints about minor things. Furthermore, he becomes easily flustered when he is teased or praised by others. While on the one hand, he tends to be a bit aggressive from time to time, often getting angry when he is getting teased by Hak to the point of attacking him in battle, he seems to agree to everything once he is getting drunk.
Despite his grandmother's numerous attempts to get him into a relationship and his general popularity with the ladies, Kija has barely any experience when it comes to love matters. In fact, the intensity from his grandmother as well as the one of his suitors about this is the reason why he stayed away from getting involved with any girls. When he is faced wih situations in which he is supposed to flirt with a girl - or a girl flirts with him, he tends to become quite stressed, awkward and exhausted. Furthermore, this also results in him not recognizing his own crush on Yona, often wondering about the meaning of the feelings he is getting around her, like a tight or painful chest.
Abilities: Dragon Claw - As Hakuryuu, Kija has inherited the dragon claw. Thanks to this, his right arm is about ten times stronger than the one of normal humans. Additionally, while the hand is usually about the size of a normal hand, he can let it grow to about the size of himself. While he uses the claw mainly for fighting, he also uses it for other tasks such as digging.
Dragon Sense - Kija is able to sense the presence of the other three dragons, even if they are separated. This is attributed to the fact that the dragons have a bond like brothers.
Alignment: Finding an alignment for Kija is hard, but Sosyne might be the most fitting, as Kija is pretty prone to fits of anger on the one side, but takes the suffering that is bestowed upon him in a calm and enduring fashion without complaining and never loses control over himself.
